D?NA?M LA M?

Joan Salvat-Papasseit

D?na?m la m? que anirem per la riba

Ben a la vora del mar Bategant,

Tindrem la mida de totes les coses

Nom?s en dir-nos que ens seguim amant.

Les barques llunyes i les de sorra

Prendran un aire fidel i discret,

No ens miraran; Miraran noves rutes

Amb l?esguard lent del copsador distret.

D?na?m la m? i arrecera la galta

Sobre el meu pit, i no temis a ning?.

I les palmeres ens donaran ombra.

I les gavines sota el sol que lluu

Ens portaran la salabror que amara,

A l?amor, tota cosa prop del mar:

I jo, aleshores, besar? la galta;

I la besada ens dur? el joc d?amar.

D?na?m la m? que anirem per la riba

Ben a la vora del mar Bategant,

Tindrem la mida de totes les coses

Nom?s en dir-nos que ens seguim amant.

Give me your hand

Give me your hand and we will go by the shore

near the sea beating.

We will have the measurement of everything

only telling each other we are in love.

The further boats and these ones on the sand

they will take a faithful and discreet air

they won?t look at us they will look for new routes

with the absent viewer?s slow look.

Give me your hand and shelter the cheek

on my chest, and don?t be afraid of anyone.

And the palms will give us shadow.

And the gulls will fly under the shinning sun.

They will bring us the salt

For loving, near the sea

Near the sea: and, then, I will kiss

You cheek, and the kiss will bring us the lovegame to play.

Give me your hand, we will go through the shove,

Very close of the sea, beasting,

We will have the size of all the things only

Saying that we still loving ourselves.

The poet

Joan Salvat-Papasseit (Barcelona, 1894 - 1824) was known above all as a poet, though he also wrote articles, manifestos and other prose of a political and social nature. His work is notable for its nonconformity, idealism and the foreboding of a premature death. His poetry, with both avant-garde and traditional influences begins with "Poemes en ondes herzianes" (Poems in Herzian Waves) of 1919, moving to "La gesta dels Estels" (The Great Deed of the Stars) of 1922, and finally to culminate with the poet's vital enthusiasm in "El poema de la rosa als llavis" (The Poem of the Rose at the Lips) in 1923. The city of Barcelona remembers him with a monument at the Moll de la Fusta, at the foot of which is a reproduction of the poem "Nocturn per a acordi?" which refers to the period when the poet was a night-watchman there. His poetic work has been made available to a wide public, in particular through musical arrangements and recitals by Llu?s Llach, Ovidi Montllor, Guillermina Motta, Ramon Muntaner, Xavier Ribalta, Joan Manuel Serrat and Rafel Subirachs, amongst others.
